Law of Attraction: A Game of Cosmic “I Spy”

wild grapesHave you heard of the Law of Attraction?

The Law of Attraction implies that everything we experience in our lives – whether positive or negative – is the product of our personal thoughts, words and energy. Advocates of the Law insist that we can make the universe bend to manifest our every desire once we identify what we want, devote an appropriate amount of energy to it, and release any beliefs that may get in the way. Some even consider it a science.

Conveniently, the Law of Attraction is so vague and immeasurable that it is impossible to prove or disprove. If you wish, you may interpret any event that complements your desires as “proof” that the Law works. And any event that doesn’t yield the desired result can easily be explained away – perhaps you haven’t given your desires enough attention; maybe you are still holding on to some resistant or negative thoughts…

The Law of Attraction is easy to champion, pointless to challenge, and hugely controversial.

Let me be frank here. The thought of us being able to manipulate the universe to do whatever we want it to do is, to me, a bunch of hooey. Yes, hooey.

However, I do agree that what we perceive is influenced by where we channel our thoughts, words and energy. It’s a game of cosmic “I Spy”.

Try it for yourself, right now.

As soon as you finish this paragraph, close your eyes and try to recall everything around you that is green. Once you’ve compiled your mental list, open your eyes and continue to read. I’ll wait…

Welcome back. How many green things did you think of?

Now take a good look around you. Really look for everything that is green. How many objects do you see that you hadn’t noticed before? Or – using Law of Attraction jargon – how many objects did you just “allow” to “manifest” simply by adjusting your focus?

Pretty neat, eh?

When we look for items that are green, we start to see our surroundings through a green filter. When we focus our thoughts, words and energy on opportunities to make money, reasons to be grateful, health issues, shopping carts with wonky wheels, pregnant women, ignorant BMW drivers or men with ridiculous comb-overs, the universe may or may not scheme to manifest them in our lives. But those items definitely come to the fore of our personal radar.

I discovered that this year with wild grapes.

Though I live in the city, I still know of a few nooks where wild grapes grow. They are much smaller than domesticated grapes, each one about the size of a pea or a kernel of corn. As you can see from the picture above, they grow in spindly clusters. Often the grapes are hidden from view under bunches of leaves. It’s possible to walk right past a bunch of wild grape vines and never notice the grapes. Does that mean that the grapes don’t exist?

When I go looking for wild grapes, they don’t magically spring into existence because of my thoughts, words and energy. I just find them because I’m looking for them.

That’s the real “secret” behind the Law of Attraction: we usually find exactly what we are looking for, and ignore the rest.

If you are reading this blog and are looking for a reason to be offended, you are sure to find it. If you are looking for a reason to be inspired…well…you may have to look harder, but you just might find that too. And neither one of those two results would change a thing that is written here. The only difference is what you are looking for.

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. – Philippians 4:8

What will be the focus of your thoughts, words and energy today?

What are you looking for?
