Guilty Pleasures

by Larry Hehn on June 9, 2011

guilty pleasureAh, guilty pleasures.

We all have them.

You know…those things that we really like but are ashamed to admit in public?

There’s that album that we only listen to when everyone else is out of earshot. What is it…ABBA? Wham? Air Supply? REO Speedwagon? Hall & Oates? Weird Al?

That Mr. Potato Head doll (or is it an “action figure”) that we play with even after the kids have gone to bed.

The violet Crocs that we wear around the house “because they’re really comfortable” but wouldn’t be caught dead wearing outside.

Of course, there’s that sappy “romantic comedy” starring Matthew McWhat’s-his-name that we joke about, but secretly enjoy when the rest of the family has gone to Grandma’s house for the weekend. Yes guys, I’m talking to you.

The book that we hide behind the paper sleeve of a different book, so no one can tell what trash we’re really reading.

“Deep-fried Mars bars? What deep-fried Mars bars?”

And that reality show that we swore we would never watch, but…

“A guilty pleasure is something one enjoys and considers pleasurable despite feeling guilt for enjoying it. The ‘guilt’ involved is sometimes simply fear of others discovering one’s lowbrow or otherwise embarrassing tastes. Fashion, video games, music, movies, and junk food can be examples of guilty pleasures.” – Wikipedia

I have my fair share of guilty pleasures:

  • puffing on a nice cigar (smoking is bad for you)
  • a fine single malt scotch (so is drinking)
  • watching Wipeout with my family (is it ok to laugh at people as they fall in a pile of mud?)
  • peanut butter and tomato sandwiches (yes, I know that everyone else in the world thinks they’re gross)
  • AC/DC (I edit the lyrics in my head, ok?)

Heck, I will even admit that I watched Ishtar twice. And enjoyed it.

Though we all have things in our lives that we may be embarrassed to admit in public, I hope that never includes our faith.

“If anyone is ashamed of me and my message in these adulterous and sinful days, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he returns in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” – Mark 8:38

Some things you need never feel ashamed of.

What are some of your guilty pleasures?

Here are many:

(1) Peanut butter, even just a spoonful. I could live on it.
(2) A glass of red wine.
(3) Chai.
(4) Roald Dahl (sometimes reading ahead when my kids are asleep)
(5) A homemade heat bag (filled with wheat from my parents’ farm)
(6) Semi sappy music with a saxophone or great piano (Lately, some Canadian tunes: Jim Cuddy’s Pull Me Through, Barenaked Ladies’ You Run Away, kd lang’s Hallelujah or Martha Wainwright’s Tower of Song). Yes, I’m a sucker for Leonard Cohen lyrics.
(7) Does Colin Firth count?

Evidently I like guilty pleasures.

For you, Leanne, Colin Firth definitely counts. Wow, you could really make some interesting combinations with all those choices! Colin Firth, a glass of red wine and a spoonful of peanut butter?

Leanne – I LOVE Leonard Cohen lyrics – Famous Blue Raincoat is my favorite – especially sung and arranged by Tori Amos 🙂

Man, this is so hard for me.

Never have smoked or drank so those are out. Can’t even say some type of coffee thingy since I don’t drink coffee.
My grandson loves playing me in basketball on Wii. He beats the snot out of me then rubs it in with a dance. He is 4.
Never have watched Wipeout although I have heard about it.
I do like peanut butter and dill pickle sandwiches. My biggest guiltiest pleasure, and the one that is the worst for me, is a bowl of ice cream every night. Must have chocolate and no nuts in some way.
I was snickered at the other day when i said something about telling someone i wanted my Led Zepplin CDs back. i am very upfront with the music tastes (rock, rock and more rock). I especially like the classic rock of Kansas and arena rock and hair bands. And I don’t listen to the lyrics at all. 🙂
My other biggest guilty pleasure is the money I spend on my bike accessories.

Must say I’ve never given peanut butter and dill pickles a try – yet. Rock on, Bill!

Coffee? But I don’t really feel guilty drinking it, so that’s out.
It used to be Dr. Phil, until my kid wrote a recipe on how to make me, and it included 3 bags of Dr. Phil. <—–Eye opening.
Coconut.
BROWN SUGAR. Omigosh. Yes, I eat it straight out of the bag.
Showers. I love to take a shower and I promise I would never do it in public.
The movie "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas". 😉

You surprised me with that one, Michael. I haven’t read or watched any of the series, but always had the impression it was geared toward teenage girls. You might’ve just opened the door for other adult male closet Twilight fans!

Peanut butter AND tomato Larry? Really? Okay mine are:
1. Watching sappy romantic comedies like “While you were sleeping” “Only You” and “Run Away Bride” “Wedding Planner” and “Shall we Dance?”
2. Watching more serious things like “Meet Joe Black” “Age of Innocence” and “Sense and Sensibility” “Pride and Prejudice” and “Pearl Harbor”.
3. Coffee – mostly white chocolate americanos with steamed cream. Yummy.
4. Hot baths
5. Music of the 70’s – I’m a child of the 70’s and I don’t care WHO KNOWS IT.
6. Salty food like chips, nachos and crackers
7. Any kind of cheese or cheese dip
8. Avocado and tomato sandwiches – or BLTA (bacon, lettuce, tomato and avocado)

Ah, the 70’s. When songs were original and instruments were real. My favorite music era too. Ok Cindy, those last three lines just made me very hungry!

Glad to help – 70’s music was REAL music – let’s just get that out of the way for the rest of the 70’s BASHERS – I’m glad you’re with me on that, Larry! And glad to help – giving you that appetite for good things 🙂

I never would have thought of peanut butter and tomato! I enjoy peanut butter and lettuce, as well as peanut butter with American cheese. I came up with those combinations on my own- my family thinks I’m such a weirdo.

I love the Real Housewives shows (not Atlanta though, I have some standards) and anything related to the Kardashians. There’s something voyeuristic about watching people’s lives who are so different from your own but I can’t stop. I can’t get enough of the show Vampire Diaries and every once in a while I watch One Tree Hill for old times’ sake.

Musicwise, I’m holding on to DCTalk’s Jesus Freak album. And even though I hate country music with a passion, I own a Rascal Flats album because the ballads helped me get over an ex-boyfriend. As a White Sox fan, there’s no shame in liking ACDC’s Back in Black and Thunderstruck.

Yep, I got laughed at in high school for having PB and lettuce for lunch one day. I felt vindicated last year when a contestant on the show “Top Chef” combined PB and tomatoes in a dish. Until they sent her home because of it. Oops.
Thanks for sharing, Leigh!

I’d have to say whiskey, boy bands (BSB is my all-time fave), and Madden video games. They’re probably not technically guilty pleasures since I don’t mind sharing these with people, but oh well!

Ok…I’d have to go with Diet Pepsi. I drink far too much of it and I know it’s bad for you in so many ways…but I’m addicted. Also, I never used to watch reality TV…until last spring. Now I watch Biggest Loser, Apprentice (though it’s not a big deal if I miss it), Bachelor and Bachelorette (those shows are just wrong in so many ways), Dancing With the Stars (esp. if there are stars I recognize on it), Survivor. Umm, what else….oh, Richard Dean Anderson, esp. when he was on Stargate SG1. That’s all I can come up with at the moment. I know there are more, but it’s late and my brain has gone to bed.

– I’m addicted to coffee
– I love war movies
– I loved “The Walking Dead” season 1 on AMC (zombies)
– I love Rum and Raisin Ice Cream 🙂
– I like to drive my car… fast!
– I’m very tech savvy and I purposely go to Best Buy and humiliate the person (often a kid) working there who knows very little of the products he actually is selling
– I love massages (spa) and ALWAYS request a woman

Ooh, I haven’t had Rum & Raisin ice cream in decades, but it’s one of my favorites. I used to get it every so often when I visited my grandfather, so it reminds me of him. I have to find me some! And then book a massage. Aaaah….

Larry, PB & tomato is not a guilty pleasure, it is just gross.
My guilty pleasures are any movies with Will Smith in them, (and amazingly enough most have scenes with him in the shower!) and ice cream, any kind just lots of it.
Another guilty pleasure is secretly watching people, especially my husband when he doesn’t realize it.

Reply

Larry Hehn June 10, 2011 at 5:37 pm

Hmm…do you even watch him when he’s busy making peanut butter and tomato sandwiches? 😉

Reply

Monique June 13, 2011 at 9:05 am

yes and I have watched him eat them as well, though I am not sure why he does! My other guilty pleasures are reading romance novels or People magazine once in a while

-I watch the Jersey Shore (yes it’s terrible, but so entertaining)
-I secretly sing girl power anthem songs (i.e. Beyonce Single Ladies, Pretty Girl Rock…lol!)
-I probably enjoy more rom-com’s than a guy should (When Harry Met Sally)
-Eating peanut butter and jelly out of their respective jars

Ha ha! Dare I say it out loud? I am a sucker for made-for-TV movies, specifically of the rom-com genre, and especially the ones that come out at Christmas. Because they are made for TV censors, they are often a bit cleaner content-wise, but oh the shame! Thin, unbelievable plots, bad writing and overacting are just the beginning in an hour and half of processed cheese. (I specify, because a good gouda should never bring shame!) Speaking of cheese, I love it with chocolate – like a slice of marbled co-jack with a homemade chocolate chip cookie… perfect.

While I appreciate a lot of great music, I am a sucker for Billboard Top 40. I enjoy listening to Taylor Swift more than any guy should. I also love to watch documentaries on really random issues, and get all fired up about them. I dip my fries in my frosty, and I happen to think mayonaise is good on fries, especially when mixed with a little ketchup.

Larry Hehn August 13, 2011 at 2:36 pm

My friend Jim got me hooked on fries with mayo just after high school, but I’ve never done the frosty dip. Sounds intriguing, Stanton. Glad you popped by!

There’s this show called Supernatural, about to brothers hunting evil (ghosts, monsters, demons, etc.). I used to proudly watch this show, and even keep up with the interviews and fan events in which the actors were kind enough to participate (there are a surprising number of events each year) and wishing I could attend one. However it’s since become a guilty pleasure for me — the show plotting has gone downhill (though thankfully the acting level has not), and I don’t even have anyone to complain to because most of my friends hear the network “CW” and immediately tell me I have no excuse for watching it. 🙂
