God Loves You

20 dollarsDid you know that God loves you?

A few summers ago our church held a family camping weekend at Pleasant Bay Camp. I was invited to speak on Sunday morning. After a few songs were sung, I stood up at the front of the dining hall, reached into my pocket and pulled out a 20 dollar bill.

The first question I asked was easy: can anyone tell me what this is? Some thought that the answer was too obvious. They hesitated, thinking it might be a trick question. Eventually they all agreed that yes, it was a 20 dollar bill.

The second question was not as easy to answer: how long do you think one of these usually stays in circulation? Many were surprised to find that the average life span of a 20 dollar bill here in Canada is only two to four years.

Then I asked everyone to guess how much it costs to make one 20 dollar bill. Almost immediately the crowd determined the correct amount: roughly nine cents.

Which led to the next question: if it only costs nine cents to make a 20 dollar bill, why is it then worth 20 dollars?

The answer?

Because the creator and issuer of that 20 dollar bill (in this case the Bank of Canada) assigned it that value.

I then shared the parable of the lost sheep, the parable of the lost coin and the parable of the lost son. In each of those parables Jesus taught that all people are valuable and loved in God’s eyes. Not just the obedient. Not just those who look good and smell good. Even sinners. Even those who don’t know God yet.

Even before it is issued by the bank, that 20 dollar bill is worth 20 dollars. Whether it is brand new or at the end of its circulation, it is worth 20 dollars. Whether it is clean or dirty. In a Mercedes or in a mud puddle. Whether it is used to buy life-saving medicine or life-ending poison. Even if it is lost. Even if it is discarded.

It is worth 20 dollars.

Even before you were born, God loved you. Whether you are young or old, God loves you. Whether you are rich or poor. Healthy or sick. “Good” or “evil”. Whether you know him or not. God loves you and wants to have a relationship with you.

And that’s worth a whole lot more than 20 dollars.

“For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16
