God’s Timing

by Larry Hehn on May 24, 2012

goldfish plantWhat is faith? It is the confident assurance that what we hope for is going to happen. It is the evidence of things we cannot yet see. –Hebrews 11:1

“But these things I plan won’t happen right away. Slowly, steadily, surely, the time approaches when the vision will be fulfilled. If it seems slow, wait patiently, for it will surely take place. It will not be delayed.” – Habakkuk 2:3

In my office window sits a goldfish plant, named for its flowers that look remarkably like little goldfish. When I received the plant it sported a single flower, which fell off shortly after its arrival. The plant still carried the promise of bearing flowers, but it stayed bare for months.

While I tend to that goldfish plant daily to give it every chance to thrive and bloom, I’m powerless to make flowers appear any sooner than God intended. No amount of effort on my part can rush His timing. All I can do is make sure that I do my part and wait patiently for God to do His.

When God gives me a promise, I get excited and want to see it realized right away. I’ve often tried to make it all happen by myself, but that’s not the way God works. He keeps me going with a vision of the promise, but also reminds me that He is the source of blessing, not I.

I’m confident that God will honor the promises in my life, as long as I continue to do my part and patiently, faithfully, wait for Him to do His.

How can I be so sure?

In my office window sits a goldfish plant, with no less than a dozen flowers in full bloom.

All in God’s timing.

“Do your part, but do not try to do God’s part.” – Joyce Meyer

“The greatest act of faith is when a man understands he is not God.” – Oliver Wendell Holmes

“The principal part of faith is patience.” – George MacDonald

Good word today Larry. Thanks for the reminder. Sometimes I just need to be patient and sit back and watch God be God!

I’m still learning this whole patience thing. I’m glad this spoke to you too, Adam. Thanks!

Love the quotes.

I think God is telling me today to be patient and let Him do His part instead of trying to do it for Him. Thank you

Great thoughts Larry! Learning to wait on God’s timing is definitely not a strong point for me.

Same here, Kevin. I love how He gives me reminders like this, though!

Larry, our pastor was just speaking on the same subject last night. We have to sit and wait on God. Our culture is not one that wants to sit and wait. We are the microwave and texting generation, where we want an answer now. But God is saying, wait, just do your part, I will do my part at the right timing. God Bless.

I’m learning to appreciate this more every year, thanks to the benefit of hindsight. Thanks, Juan!

What a great reminder. God’s promises and timing are always perfect even though it might be hard to wait until He fulfill His promises. I really like your blog.

Love it, Larry! Beautifully written, to say the least. I have a tree in my front yard, and HUBS and I were already to dig it up… and then we saw several leaves trying to sprout through. We thought the heat and deer had killed it off, but it bloomed again, in His time.

You and I wrote about the same Bilble verse; what are the odds of that? I guess He feels there needs to be some discussion regarding FAITH… what do you think??!?!?! I have Hebrews11:1 sitting on my desk… Faith is my favorite word.

I love how common themes come up with no collaboration. It sure makes me sit up and notice. Thanks, Carol!
