Greatness In One Easy Step

by Larry Hehn on April 12, 2012

volunteersMartin Luther King Jr. had this to say about greatness – “Everybody can be great…because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love.”

When you look in the mirror, do you see a person of greatness? Did you know that you possess everything you need to be ‘great’ right now, right where you are?

Greatness has nothing to do with your level of education, celebrity, athletic ability or political power. Your physical attributes, fashion sense or how much money you make are unimportant.

God has given you a unique assortment of gifts and unique ways to use them. They may not seem special to you. Since they come so naturally to you, they may even seem trivial. Still, you are equipped to serve others in ways that no one else can.

How to be great in one easy step?

Use your gifts. To serve others.

Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms. – 1 Peter 4:10

There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. – 1 Corinthians 12:4-5

The greatest among you must be a servant. – Matthew 23:11

Who inspires you by the way they serve?

To answer your question, my former pastor at my church back home inspires me…there are others as well, but his name was the first that came to mind. Some servants are people I know personally, and others I’ve “met” online also inspire me.

For me, it’s my Dad. I’m pretty sure his love language is acts of service. He volunteers at church and charities, and helps all kinds of people with odd jobs, even in his 80’s. His example has been inspirational to me.

Thanks for sharing, Shelley!

My dad-always looking for ways to touch people with God’s love. It is amazing, inspiring, and more than a little convicting at times.

Even something that seems as meaningless as helping someone move is a great way to love them. Have you ever tried moving by yourself?? The last time Natalia and I moved, we had people cancel on us. It ended up being Natalia, myself, and one other guy moving everything. Needless to say, we bought him some good Jet’s Pizza afterwards.. but we couldn’t have repaid him for that. We couldn’t have done it by ourselves.

My wife and I moved three times in our first two years of marriage. After all the help we received, I swore that I would help people move whenever I could. Our most recent move was helping a lady in our church move to a new apartment. Half the church descended on her place, and we had everything moved in the span of a couple of hours. It was awesome!
