I’ve been a fan of Janet and Greta Podleski for years, ever since I bought a copy of their best-selling low-fat cookbook Crazy Plates back in 2001.
Loaded with delicious, healthy recipes and corny humor, their cookbooks have sold more than 2 million copies. Not too shabby!
I like all of Janet and Greta’s books, but their latest effort, The Looneyspoons Collection, is my favorite.
Among the 325 recipes, you’ll find tips for healthy living, fun bits of trivia and some very interesting discussions.
Like the one on page 281, titled Banana Banter.
It seems the Podleski sisters just can’t agree about the proper way to eat bananas.
Greta likes to peel her bananas completely and throw away the peel before eating.
Janet prefers to peel her bananas halfway down and hold the unpeeled bottom while she eats the peeled top.
As it says in their book, “Greta thinks Janet looks like one of the characters from Planet of the Apes when she eats bananas this way, but what does she know?”
For the record, Janet is also open to mashing her bananas and eating them like baby food.
To help settle their playful dispute, the sisters invited readers to email their thoughts.
Naturally, I felt the urge to email them to let them know the sad truth.
Janet, Greta, you are both wrong.
When I eat a banana, I peel it halfway, hold the unpeeled portion with my left hand, and break bite-size bits off the peeled portion with my right hand for me to eat.
That’s the proper way to eat a banana.
Ok, not really.
It amazes me how often I tend to stress over trivial stuff, think that the way I do things is the right way, and that all other ways are wrong.
Like how to eat bananas, arrange the dishes in the dishwasher, or hang the toilet paper roll.
Are those really hills worth dying on?
But sometimes I treat them that way.
Thanks, Janet and Greta (and my wife Monique!) for helping me realize that some things should be laughed about rather than stressed about.
And that there’s more than one way to eat bananas.
But while we’re here, let’s join the sisters and have some fun with it!
What do you think is the “proper” way to eat bananas?
