Heath White was striving for the “perfect” life. A top student, athlete, Air Force pilot and FBI agent, he excelled at just about everything he attempted. He settled for nothing less than the best in all areas of his life.
When he found out that his second child, Paisley, had Down Syndrome, it shattered his world.
But, as you’ll see in this video, sometimes “perfection” can be found in the most unlikely circumstances.
Things that are Excellent is a regular feature that celebrates “what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable…things that are excellent and worthy of praise” (Philippians 4:8). “You’re my light in the dark. It’s a privilege to be your dad.”
Oh, my. This is such a powerful tribute to a beautiful little girl and to the power of love’s ability to change another person’s entire life.
I am awed by his honesty – as painful as it is – both as a parent and as a Developmental Services Worker. Too often, society views people with disabilities as broken, the way Paisley’s dad once did.
How wonderful that he was given that moment of connection with her, for it has transformed him into a better man…and the kind of man his daughter can be proud to call “Daddy”.
What a beautiful story on this blessed Thanksgiving weekend. So much to be thankful for: truth, beauty, love.

Thank you for this, Liz. I wasn’t sure how to summarize this story, and you’ve done it perfectly!
What a great story. I’m pretty much speechless. What an amazing gift God gave them in that little girl. It’s interesting how society will often view something that is perfect as “broken”, and something perceived as perfect, is actually what’s “broken”. (If that little riddle makes sense.

I had to think about it for a bit but yep, that makes sense Annie. Thanks!
What a touching story! Thanks for sharing it.
My pleasure, Marlene!
I saw this very same program Larry and blogged about it the next day.
http://billgrandi.ovcf.org/wordpress/?m=20121003 One week later I also posted about the story of the coach who gave his kidney to one of his players that was also featured on E:60. Both were real tear jerkers but also great examples of Christ’s love for us.

Ooh, I haven’t seen the story about the coach donating his kidney. I will have to check that one out. When I started the “Things that are Excellent” feature, I wasn’t really sure how much content would be available to fill it. How awesome to know that there are lots of stories like this worth sharing. Thanks, Bill!
